Primary school – Prep to Year 6

Director of Learning: Mrs Eleanor Tan

Northside Christian College Primary Department is an exciting and innovative place to be!

As well as our Core Curriculum, Primary students are involved in engaging activities such as the Prep and Year 6 Buddy Program and FIL (Fulfilling Integrated Learning in Maths) an elective program for Grades 1-6. The Prep class introduced the Maths Treasure Chest; a case filled with extension mathematical games for students to share with their families.

In 2011 a new addition to our Home Economics Department was the introduction of a Grade 3 & 4 Sustainable Life Skills Program. This program concentrates on developing skills that will help the students be more productive and environmentally conscious citizens. In first term the students worked on their sewing skills, familiarising themselves with the use of the school sewing machines and other sewing techniques. This unit concluded with each student using recycled upholstery to make their own pencil case, complete with a zipper and earning their sewing machine safety licences! Term two has seen the students involved in learning the art of Cooking in the school kitchens and working hard in the school vegetable garden. They are learning skills in basic cookery, soil preparation, planning & planting, as well as the benefits of composting & mulching and are all looking forward to cooking their own produce each week.

Students also participate in a weekly assembly on Friday afternoons at 2:40 in the Multipurpose Room, which parents are welcome to attend.

All primary students at Northside Christian College complete classes in English, Mathematics, Bible, Integrated Studies, Information Technology, Physical Education, Music and Art. All Junior Primary students also participate in a Movement for Learning Program, designed to enhance gross and fine motor skills.
