NewsPrimary SchoolSecondary SchoolTechnologyVCE

This week the College has celebrated Science Week, which is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Thousands of individuals get involved during the week, taking part in more than 1000 science events across the nation.

National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists’ to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in scientific pursuits among the general public and to encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in.

Our students have enjoyed participating in a wide range of events throughout Science Week at Northside Christian College, including a visit from Professor Bunsen on Wednesday. The staff at the College also enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate Science Week with a special science-themed morning tea hosted by the Science Faculty. The Year 11 Chemistry students enjoyed showcasing their learning, performing a demonstration for the Prep – Year 2 students. Other activities during the week included paper plane construction, bridge building activities, water quality testing (Darebin Creek Incursion) and rocket building. The week of activities will conclude with a rocket launch on Friday.

Many students in the Senior School at Northside Christian College are passionate about their Science studies. The College has a good tradition of offering VCE Science courses in order to provide students with an opportunity to study a broad range of university courses after graduating. Many Science courses are also prerequisite subjects for University admissions. The College has offered Biology (Units 1 – 4), Chemistry (Units 1 – 4) and Physics (Units 1 – 4) during 2018. Furthermore, the College has also offered Environmental Studies as a Year 9 and 10 elective course this year.

The College is grateful for the funding support of a National Science Week school grant, which has assisted the College in providing a variety of science activities during National Science Week. The grants are administered by the Australian Science Teachers Association.

Thank you to the Science Faculty for organising this special week for our College community.
